History professor Peter Munro is on a quest for spiritual truth. While on his physical journey in the Scottish Highlands seeking the well at the world’s end, he encounters a variety of characters, from fishermen to illicit whisky distillers, who enable him to discover that the key to eternal happiness is unconditional love.

Neil M. Gunn was born in Dunbeath, Caithness, in 1891, the seventh of nine children. Gunn left home to live with his sister and her family, was educated privately and passed Civil Service exams in 1907. Throughout the 1920s he published short stories and his first novel, The Grey Coast. He wrote many other books, including The Silver Darlings (1941) and his autobiography, The Atom of Delight (1956). He died in 1973.

‘Modern Scottish fiction reaches its highest peak in the novels of Neil M. Gunn . . . he transcends regionalism and acquires universality.’ - The Scotsman
