Philipson was well-known for his bold colours and his free use of paint, yet he always retained precise figures within his work. His art embodied many themes, ranging from female nudes through cockfighting to World War I. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1936 to 1940, and later returning as head of the drawing and painting department from 1960–1982. His first one man show at the Scottish Gallery was in Edinburgh in 1954.
