’So much more than the Bill Bryson of his day’--Scotsman

Chiang Yee was exiled from his Chinese homeland for over 40 years, during which time he wrote and illustrated a number of travel classics. The Silent Traveller series, which includes titles on Edinburgh and London, began with this delightful book on the Lake District, in which he compares the Chinese and European love of nature, and explores his feelings about his exile.

Chiang Yee (1903-1977) was born in Jiujiang, China, but exiled from his family and homeland because of political unrest. He lived in London for several years before settling in the United States. A painter, calligrapher, poet, lecturer and travel writer, he wrote the classic textbook Chinese Calligraphy, as well as the renowned Silent Traveller series, covering cities as diverse as Oxford, New York and Dublin.
