In about 1826 James Logan set off to walk the length and breadth of Scotland, recording the scenery, antiquities and people in words and sketches. Five years later he published his two-volume magnum opus, The Scottish Gael. The book has stood the test of time and is still accepted as an accurate and scholarly account of Scottish life at that period. It has been described as 'the best work that has ever been written on the origin, antiquities, traditions and national peculiarities of the Caledonian Celts.'

It is a wide-ranging book, which covers topics such as the origins of the Celts; military training, tactics, weapons and accoutrements; dress ancient and modern, including a table of clan tartans; hunting, agriculture, food and drink; poetry and music; health and medicines; customs, including marriage ceremonies and funeral rites.

One of the advantages of new technology is that it enables hard-to-find books to be made available again. We are pleased to present the first fruits of exploring John Donald's classic backlist of academic titles. Not only do we hope to add more titles to the list but look forward to bringing in other titles suitable for this system as time goes on.
