Based on a thesis which won the Hume Brown prize for Scottish history, this book opens up new perspectives on one of the classic themes of Scotland's past.
It is the first national study of the age, sex and status of migrants, and by sampling Scottish migrants, using the census, the author has quantified out-migration by county and region. Emigrants have been measured in a similar manner to migrants, and it is now possible to define whether or not population loss in countries was through emigration or migration.
