Marjory Fleming was born in 1803 and educated by an older cousin, who encouraged her to keep a journal to improve her writing, spelling and punctuation. Encompassing topics as diverse as arithmetic ('I am now going to tell you about the horrible and wretched plague that my multiplication gives me'), love ('Mr Cranky is a great buck & pretty good-looking'), history and religion ('I am very sorry to say that I forgot God, that is to say I forgot to pray'). Marjory's unique observations were intended for an audience no wider than her tutor and her immediate family. After her tragic death at the age of eight, however, all her letters, poems and diaries were carefully preserved and eventually found their way into print. This new edition of the journals gives today's reader the opportunity to enjoy all that was 'wrote by M.F.' – the inimitable Marjory Fleming.
