Over the centuries, countless buildings have been built and demolished throughout the county of Ayrshire. In this informative and beautifully illustrated book, Dane Love looks at a wide selection, from castles that have been destroyed or replaced by modern mansions, to country houses that have succumbed to dry rot or lack of funds for their upkeep. He also visits various burghs and villages, rediscovering the lost architecture of everyday buildings including churches, banks, tollbooths, public halls, schools, shops and houses.
Ayrshire was once rich in mining and other industries that have now disappeared. Lost Ayrshire details the county’s lost coalmines and the associated miners’ rows, as well as former cotton mills, power stations, shipyards, factories and other places of work. The result is a fascinating glimpse into Ayrshire’s past, and a poignant reminder of the extent to which the county’s heritage has been lost over the years.
Dane Love was born in Cumnock, Ayrshire. He has written numerous books of local history. He is honorary secretary of the Scottish Covenanter Memorials Association and a committee member of Ayrshire Archaeological and Natural History Society.
