This major biography traces Sharp’s development from Presbyterian minister to archbishop, examining how he manoeuvred his way through the Civil Wars, the Protectorate and the Restoration.

James Sharp (1618-79) has been the object of a great deal of abuse both from his contemporaries and from historians. His life is placed within its proper context in terms of the ideas and attitudes of his peers and contemporaries, and new light is thrown on his motivations and the influences that acted upon him. His canny ability to weather the ups and downs of political and religious change enabled him to remain in office under very different regimes, but in the end he was brutally murdered by a band of Covenanters, who saw him only as a persecutor and a perjured prelate.

One of the advantages of new technology is that it enables hard-to-find books to be made available again. We are pleased to present the first fruits of exploring John Donald’s classic backlist of academic titles. Not only do we hope to add more titles to the list but look forward to bringing in other titles suitable for this system as time goes on.
