'an intense and poignant look at lost times and lost love, written with that wry sardonic with that comes with hindsight' – Isla Dewer
Karen MacKenzie is too big for her life in a small run-down Scottish island resort, but she fails to realise that the problem is more than a matter of losing a few pounds or, indeed, saving a few. Her tiny ambitions are knocked off-course when she finds herself in the arms of Charlie McGuigan, a man 26 years her senior who hasn’t had a date in a decade and who initiates her in the ways of hard drinking, heavy smoking and surreal hangovers. But he also instils in her a sense of her own self-worth and a thirst for something better. Unfortunately for Charlie, this means sacrificing the most important thing in his life.
