Neil Munro

Neil Munro

Neil Munro (1863–1930) was a journalist, newspaper editor, poet, author and literary critic, born in Inveraray. Although a serious writer of poetry, non-fiction, short stories such as Jaunty Jock and Other Stories and The Lost Pibroch, and novels including Children of the Tempest Munro is best known for his humorous short stories, originally written under the pen name of Hugh Foulis.
 
The best known were about the fictional Clyde puffer the Vital Spark and her captain Para Handy, but he also delighted in the life of waiter and kirk beadle Erchie MacPherson: My Droll Friend, and the travelling drapery salesman Jimmy Swan: The Joy Traveller. Munro died on 22nd December 1930 at his home in Helensburgh.
 
A biography of Munro was written by his grandaughter Lesley Lendrum.
