Andrew Murray Scott

Andrew Murray Scott was brought up in Angus and now lives at Broughty Ferry with his wife Frances, a librarian.

A writer since the 1970s, Andrew is the author of four novels and ten non-fiction books including the biography, Bonnie Dundee first published by John Donald in 1989 and reprinted by Birlinn in 2000.

Other books by Andrew include Modern Dundee, a successful hardback published in 2003, reprinted in paperback in 2007 and the evergreen Discovering Dundee, reprinted three times, and continually in print since its first appearance in 1989. He has also published books on current affairs and a biography of the Scottish ‘beat’ writer Alexander Trocchi, published by Polygon alongside an edited collection of Trocchi’s shorter writing, Invisible Insurrection of a Million Minds, which Andrew edited.

But fiction has always been Andrew’s principal focus. Although he had had dozens of short stories, essays and poems in print since the 1970s, and spent six years as a freelance journalist in the 1980s publishing several hundred features in the Scottish quality press during that time, his big break did not come until 1999 when he won the inaugural Dundee Book Prize.

Andrew’s second and third novels, Estuary Blue (Polygon, 2001) and The Mushroom Club (2007) helped to further consolidate his credentials as an author of well-written literary fiction.

A fulltime writer and journalist in the 1980s, Andrew has mostly combined his writing with ‘day-jobs’. After nine years as Media Lecturer and Creative Writing tutor at Dundee College, he now works as a Press Officer.
