Greig-Duncan Folk Song Volume 1

by Patrick Shuldham-Shaw and Emily B. Lyle (editors) - Find out more about the author

The Greig- Duncan Folk Song Collection was described by the late Patrick Shuldham-Shaw as ‘Scotland’s biggest and finest manuscript collection of folk song, biggest in sheer size and finest account of integrity, breadth of vision and high scholastic ability of its collectors’. Through the publication of the collection in its entirety, he added, ‘these two men will receive the honour due to them in the form that they themselves would have wished, and the world will have the opportunity to study and get to know the richness of the folk song collection’.

The collection was made in the early years of the century by Gavin Greig, schoolmaster at whitehill, New Deer and the Reverend James Bruce Duncan, United Free Church minister at Lynturk, near Alford, both in Aberdeenshire.
